Prof YONG Kwet Yew
Vice President (Campus Infrastructure)
Professor Yong Kwet Yew is Vice President (Campus Infrastructure) at the National University of Singapore. He oversees all matters related to the planning and development of campus physical infrastructure, including the holistic development of Kent Ridge campus, Bukit Timah Campus, University Town and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore at Outram into vibrant and connected campuses. Prof Yong also represents the University in dealing with agencies and government authorities on land and development issues. The key committees which Prof Yong is engaged in as Vice President (Campus Infrastructure) include the Campus Planning and Development Committee, NUS Board of Trustees; the University's Resource and Space Allocation Committees as well as the NUS-Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) Infrastructure Development Committee.
A graduate of the University of Sheffield, England, under a Grouped Scholarship and George Senior Fellowship, Prof Yong has been a faculty member of the NUS Department of Civil Engineering since 1979. He was Founding Director, Centre for Soft Ground Engineering from 1991 to 1994 and was Head, Department of Civil Engineering from 1995 to 2000. He was elected Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Singapore in 2001 and appointed Accredited Adjudicator, Singapore Mediation Centre in 2005.
The focus of Prof Yong's long-term research programme is related to the geotechnical problems associated with the construction of underground transportation and underground facilities in urbanised Singapore. His other research interests are deep excavations and tunnelling; land reclamation and ground improvement; and integrated infrastructure systems. Over the past decade, he has received, as Investigator or Collaborator, more than $8.6 million of research funding from external bodies. He has published more than 200 technical publications. These include papers in international refereed journals; keynote and guest lectures at 25 international conferences. In addition, he is Chairman, NUS-MINDEF Centre for Protective Technology.
The Singapore Government awarded Prof Yong the Public Administration Medal (Silver) National Day Awards in 2000; and the Public Service Medal in 2004. Singapore's Ministry of Manpower also presented him with the Certificate of Commendation (Individual) in 2000. He was the recipient of the First Institution of Engineers, Innovation Award (Merit) for Land Reclamation Techniques (1990), Faculty of Engineering Teaching Excellence Award (1993, 1994 & 1996) and the Faculty Hall of Fame for Teaching Excellence (1997).
Prof Yong is President of the Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society and chairs several government advisory committees and professional committees. He has also served as consultant to government agencies as well as local and international companies on several major construction projects in Singapore, ASEAN and China.
