Prof Ashraf A KASSIM
Vice Provost (Special Duties)
Professor Ashraf A Kassim is Vice Provost (Special Duties) at the National University of Singapore and Professor at the NUS Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE). As Vice Provost, he assists the Provost in overseeing industry engagement, undergraduate internships and career preparation programmes for students.
After receiving his Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) and Master of Engineering degrees in Electrical Engineering from NUS, Prof Ashraf joined Texas Instruments where he was involved in research and development of machine vision algorithms for automation equipment used at their high volume IC production plants worldwide. A recipient of Mendaki Foundation’s Anugerah Cemerlang (Academic Excellence) Award, he joined NUS as a Senior Tutor in 1988 and went on to pursue his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University.
Prof Ashraf has been actively involved in research and teaching while holding various administrative positions, including Assistant Director, Higher Education (Universities) at the Ministry of Education (1999 to 2000), Deputy Head (Academic) of ECE Department (2001 to 2004), Vice-Dean (Undergraduate Programmes) of the Faculty of Engineering (2005 to 2014) and Associate Provost (Undergraduate Education) (2014 to 2016). He was a Council Member of the Central Singapore Community Development Council (1997 to 2000) and also previously served in Republic Polytechnic’s School of Engineering’s Advisory Committee (2002 to 2014) and the Singapore Science Centre Board (2011 to 2013). Prof Ashraf received an Institution of Engineers Singapore award in 2011 for his contributions to the Engineering Accreditation Board and the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 2012.
Prof Ashraf received various teaching awards over the years including the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award. His main research interests are in the areas of computer vision, medical image analysis, image processing and machine learning. He has published several book chapters, a book and over 170 technical journal and conference publications. Prof Ashraf has been involved in the programme and organising committees of a number of international conferences, and is also on the editorial boards of several journals.
