NUS Chinese Drama was formed in 2003 when it officially became a member of the NUS Centre For the Arts. To date, the group has more than 45 members. Since its founding, it has been flourishing under the guidance of drama tutor, Mr Peter Sau Jia Liang, an experienced drama tutor and actor in the English as well as Chinese theatre scenes. Peter shares his experience with local and oversees productions, and has exposed drama members to new performing styles.
The group's vision is to promote drama in Chinese language, and encourages critical thinking among members and the audience by presenting different perspectives on issues raised in its performances. The group aims to equip its members with professional theatre performance and management, thus producing quality and creative productions, and establishing the group as a semi-professional student theatre group.
Members are trained in all aspects of theatre – from backstage to front stage, and from the creative process of creating a performance to the stage and administrative management.
The group's major performances were staged during the NUS Arts Festival in 2006 and 2007. In addition to public performances which reached out to the school communities, NUS Chinese Drama has performed to the general public at Community Libraries. The group organises the CFA Chinese Scriptwriting Competition to encourage, promote and recognise Chinese scriptwriting in Singapore. In conjunction with this competition, veteran theatre practitioners have been invited to lead drama workshops and seminars to impart knowledge and share their views.
