FAQs on Academic Dress





Which Academic Dress should I order?
Your Academic Dress should correspond to the degree that you are awarded in. For information on the different types of Academic Dress, please click here.

How may I get the Academic Dress?
You can place your order online to purchase or rent the Academic Dress. The online ordering opens on 16 March 2009 and closes on 29 May 2009, 12 noon.

After this date, you will have to order your Academic Dress at the Multi-purpose Sports Hall 1, Sports & Recreation Centre, from 25 June to 30 June 2009.

The collection schedule for different degrees/ceremonies will be published at the Commencement website on 1 June 2009. Please come at the scheduled date/time to collect your academic dress and invitation package. Otherwise, please be prepared for a longer waiting time while the staff retrieves your package.

How much does it cost to purchase/rent the Academic Dress?

Above rates are for one set of Academic Dress and applicable to only current-year graduates.

The rental deposit will be refunded when the Academic Dress is returned without damages. Damages refer to cutting or alterations of any kinds, burns, tears, rips and run in fabric, holes, discoloration, stains, hot iron marks, glue marks, scotch tape marks and missing buttons. Damages will be assessed on a case by case basis

Are the Academic Dresses for purchase new?
Yes, they are new.

Are the Academic Dresses on rental new?
No, the Academic Dresses for rental are second-hand. They will be dry-cleaned before issue. As they were produced at different times, there are slight variations in sizes and colours.

How do I determine my gown and cap size?
For the best fit when ordering your Academic Dress, we recommend the following guidelines:

Gown size:
Measure and record total height from head to floor, with the shoes which you will be wearing during your Commencement Ceremony.

154 cm and below XS
155 cm to 162 cm S
163 cm to 170 cm M
171 cm to 178 cm L
179 cm to 184 cm XL
185 cm to 190 cm XXL
above 190 cm XXXL

Mortarboard or Bonnet Size:
Measure and record the circumference around the head at 2.5 centimeters above the ears.

54.5 cm and below S
55.0 cm to 58.0 cm M
above 58.0 cm L

Note:
  • Hoods are free size.
  • This is only an indicated guideline. If you are not sure of the size, please try the samples at NUS Co-op @ Forum before making an online order. An administrative fee of $10.00 is chargeable should there be changes to the online order.

Can I try the Academic Dress before I order it online?
Yes, you can. The samples of the gowns, mortarboards and bonnets are available at NUS Co-op @ Forum from 13 April to 29 May 2009 at the following hours.

Can I make changes to my online order? Will there be any charges?
You can email your change request to indicating your online order reference number, name, matriculation number and the changes required by 31 May 2009.

To ensure that each change request is fulfilled, there will be an additional staff employed to manage these changes and reply to graduates throughout the Online Ordering period. As such, there will be an administrative fee of $10.00 (inclusive of 7% GST) per change request.

Can I rent or buy the gown, hood and mortarboard separately?
We do not provide rental service for separate items. However, you may wish to purchase the gown, hood and mortarboard separately. The charges are as follows:

Above rates are applicable to only current-year graduates.

Please come to the Multi-purpose Sports Hall 1, Sports & Recreation Centre, on the date scheduled for your degree to buy on the spot.

What are my options if I am unable to collect the Academic Dress personally?
Option 1: Home Delivery

We can arrange to deliver the Academic Dress to you within the main island of Singapore at a charge of $15.00 (inclusive of 7% GST). The option for Home Delivery is given in the online order form.

The Academic Dress will be packaged with your Graduate Attendance Card and two invitation cards for your guests.

The deadline for request of Home Delivery is 29 May 2009, 12 noon.

Option 2: Authorize someone

You can authorize someone to make payment and collect the Academic Dress on your behalf at the Multi-purpose Sports 1, Sports & Recreation Centre on the date scheduled for your degree.

You will need to complete the Collection Authorization Form (PDF, 76KB) and the authorized person must present:

  • The duly completed and signed Collection Authorization Form
  • Your original Matriculation Card or a copy of your Matriculation Card/ NRIC/ Passport
  • The authorized person’s NRIC/ Passport


When and where can I collect the Academic Dress?
The Academic Dress will be distributed at the Multi-purpose Sports Hall 1, Sports & Recreation Centre, from 25 June to 30 June 2009. Distribution hours are:

Gown Distribution @ MPSH 1  
Monday to Friday 10am to 8pm
Saturday 9am to 8pm
Sunday Closed

Please check the collection schedule for your degree/ceremony.

How do I make payment?
For self-collection, payment is made on the day you collect the Academic Dress. Payment can be made in cash and through Nets at the Multi-purpose Sports Hall 1, Sports & Recreation Centre.

For home delivery, please make your cheque payable to "NUS Co-op" and state your full Name, Matriculation Number and Online Order Reference Number behind it. Mail your cheque to:

Your cheque must reach us by 1 June 2009 or your request will be regarded as ’Self-Collection’. The cheque amount should include the following:
  • Purchase price with GST, or rental price with deposit and GST.
  • Home delivery fee of $15.00

How much is the home delivery fee?
The delivery fee for sending the Academic Dress to your local address is $15.00 (inclusive of 7% GST).

Is there a dress code?
There is no special dress code for graduates but it is advisable to dress neatly. The Academic Dress generally looks good against a white background (eg. white shirt/blouse). Female graduates are advised to wear court shoes and male graduates to wear a tie and dress shoes.

When can I return the Academic Dress? Can I return it immediately after the ceremony?
If you have rented the Academic Dress, you may return the Academic Dress immediately after your Commencement ceremony. NUS Co-op will have a counter to process such returns at the Commencement centre. Your deposit will be refunded to you in a crossed cheque within 60 days after 23 September 2009, provided the Academic Dress is returned without damages.

After Commencement, you may return the Academic Dress with the rental receipt to NUS Co-op @ Forum, from 19 to 23 September 2009, 9.30am to 7pm on weekdays, and 9.30am to 3pm on Saturday. Your deposit will be refunded to you by cheque on the spot, provided the Academic Dress is returned without damages.

If the rented Academic Dress is not returned to NUS Co-op by 23 September 2009, your deposit will be forfeited.

Can I ask someone to return the Academic Dress on my behalf?
Yes, you will need to complete the Return Authorization Form (PDF, 87KB). The authorized person must produce the completed form when returning the Academic Dress.
