Student Pass Cancellation and Visa Application

  1. I am an international student who have graduated in January (or any other months before June) but my Student Pass is only expiring in August.  Can I still hold on to my Student Pass and return to Singapore in July to attend my Commencement ceremony?
  2. I am an international student who will be graduating in June, but my Student Pass is only expiring in August. Can I still hold on to my Student Pass and return to Singapore in July to attend my Commencement ceremony?
  3. I am an international student who will be graduating in June, and my Student Pass is expiring on the day before my Commencement ceremony. Can I still hold on to my Student Pass and surrender to ICA after my Ceremony?

  5. My parents/guests are coming to Singapore to attend my ceremony. They need a letter for visa application. Can the University assist to issue a letter stating that my parents/guests are invited to attend my Commencement ceremony?

Ceremony Schedule

Q1. Is it possible to have the schedule of ceremonies published earlier?

We will only be able to assign specific degrees to specific days when the graduation numbers are more confirmed. Usually, this will be some time in April at the earliest.

Q2. There are two dates and times for my Faculty’s Commencement ceremonies in the schedule of ceremonies. Can I choose which ceremony to attend?

No, you are required to attend the ceremony to which your degree has been allocated. Please check the schedule of ceremonies for the specific date and time of the ceremony that your degree has been allocated. The schedule of ceremonies by degrees will be available in the Commencement website some time in April.


Listing of Graduates

Q1. How do I access the listing of all graduates to be presented at the ceremony?

In support of the campus-wide initiative to promote environmental sustainability, the listing of all graduates will be published solely in an electronic format which will be available for the duration of Commencement only.  More information on how to access the listing on mobile devices will be available on this website closer to Commencement.

On the Day of Ceremony

Q1. What time must graduates arrive at the University Cultural Centre for the ceremony?

You are advised to arrive at the University Cultural Center (UCC) at least one hour prior to the official start time of the ceremony.

Seating time for graduates and guests commences 45 minutes prior to the official start time of each ceremony.

To ensure that the ceremony starts on time, all graduates must be seated inside the UCC Hall at 9.30am for the Main Ceremony, and at 9.40am/2.10pm/6.40pm for the remaining morning/afternoon/evening ceremonies, respectively.

Q2. What should I wear on the day of ceremony?

The dress code for Commencement is “Shirt and Tie”. Please click here for more information on attire.

Graduates with Mobility Challenges

Q1. I am a graduate with a disability and will be attending the Commencement ceremony. Can there be special arrangements made for my seating and presentation on stage?

Yes, special arrangements can be made. Please indicate what assistance you might require when you register your attendance online.

Q2. I have sustained an injury recently and will be in wheelchair on the day of my ceremony. Who can I approach for assistance?

Please send an email to commencement@nus.edu.sg to notify the Commencement Team of your condition, preferably one day before your ceremony or earlier.

Photographs / Souvenirs

Q1. Does NUS take photographs of the graduates on stage?

Yes, we have authorized photographers who will take photographs of the graduates as they are presented on stage. Please check with them at their booth which is located at the University Cultural Centre Foyer area on how to place the order.

Q2. Who is the official photographer and how do I order my stage photographs?

The official photographer for the ceremonies and order information will be announced in due course.  Alternatively, you may also check with them at their booth which is located at the UCC Foyer area on how to place the order.

Q3. Can I buy the ceremonies DVD from NUS?

We do not produce DVDs or VCDs of the ceremonies for sale. However, as we will be having a live webcast of each ceremony, you may download these thereafter at this website.

Student Pass Cancellation and Visa Application

Q1. I am an international student who have graduated in January (or any other months before June) but my Student Pass is only expiring in August. Can I still hold on to my Student Pass and return to Singapore in July to attend my Commencement ceremony?

No. International students who are conferred of their degrees in the months of July of the previous year to May of the current year must surrender their Student’s Pass within 7 days of the conferment date, as he/she is no longer eligible to hold the Student’s Pass.

Q2. I am an international student who will be graduating in June, but my Student Pass is only expiring in August.  Can I still hold on to my Student Pass and return to Singapore in July to attend my Commencement ceremony?

Yes. International students who are conferred their degrees in June may hold on to their student’s passes to attend Commencement provided that their ceremony falls within the validity period of the Student’s Pass.  Such students should surrender their Student’s Passes for cancellation as soon as their Commencement ceremonies are over.

Q3. I am an international student who will be graduating in June, and my Student Pass is expiring on the day before my Commencement ceremony. Can I still hold on to my Student Pass and surrender to ICA after my Ceremony?

No, you are not allowed to remain in Singapore without a valid pass. For students whose Student's Passes are expiring before Commencement, they should surrender their Student's Passes to the Student's Pass Unit, 4th floor, ICA building (next to Lavender MRT station) before the expiry date of the pass. ICA will then issue such students with a short term Social Visit Pass (SVP) to remain in Singapore. The duration of the SVP issued will be at the discretion of ICA.

Q4. Can the University assist to issue a letter stating that I will be attending the Commencement ceremony for my visa application to Singapore?

We can assist to issue a letter stating the date and time of the Commencement ceremony that you will be attending for the degree that you have been conferred. However, we are unable to do the actual visa application. If you need this letter, please send your request with the following information to commencement@nus.edu.sg:
