Abstract
There is no doubt in many people's minds that China is the place to be. The Chinese economic dynamo glows hot in stark contrast to the sluggishness of the developed world. Everywhere you look, there seems to be an explosive proliferation of new ventures, manufacturing plants and marketing networks across Chinese cities, both large and small, in recent years. China-themed counters in stock exchanges in Singapore and New York have also been feverishly bidded up. Everyone from global multi-nationals to neighbourhood coffeeshops seems to want a piece of the action. One cannot help but wonder if this is another fad that will invariably pass with time. There are no easy answers and I cannot tell the future. However, I will share with the audience some of my experiences working with both established and fledgling companies that have ventured into China. Through these stories and case studies, I hope to give the audience a sense of the challenges and opportunities that await intrepid entrepreneurs seeking fame and fortune in the middle kingdom.
About the Speaker
Mr Chay Kwong Soon is a seasoned entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He was a co-founder of Creative Technology Ltd, the world's largest PC soundcard and multimedia devices maker. Serving as General Manager and President of the company from 1988 to 1996, Chay drove Creative's expansion across Europe and Asia and was instrumental in growing sales from US$5 million to over US$1 billion. He also oversaw Creative's public listings on NASDAQ and SGX.
After Creative, Chay founded the Enspire Group in 1998 to invest in and accelerate the development of promising technology start-ups in Asia and Silicon Valley. Enspire has over the years developed a knack for incubating early-stage ventures and a track record of successful exits. Chay led the investment rounds in V-Bits and Alacrity Communications in the late 90s, two early-stage Silicon Valley start-ups in the communications space. Under his leadership as Chairman of both companies, V-Bits and Alacrity were subsequently acquired by industry leaders Cisco Systems and Transwitch Corp respectively. In Asia, Chay presently serves as, inter-alia, Chairman of SGX-listed contract manufacturer Beyonics Technology Ltd and Leadtek (Shanghai) Research, an affiliate of Taipei Stock Exchange-listed graphics and communications products maker Leadtek Research. Since taking over the helm at Beyonics in 2000, Chay has overseen a five-fold jump in sales of the company. In February 2004, Chay became a Board member of the Singapore Economic Development Board.
Chay graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the National University of Singapore in 1981.
