SMS@NUS

In 2002, NUS implemented a management system to govern the safety and health of its staff, students, visitors, tenants and contractors. The NUS Safety & Health Management System referred to as SMS@NUS henceforth was established to provide a structured approach to develop, implement, monitor and maintain policies, objectives and programmes aimed to control University’s safety and health risks.

The SMS@NUS was established in accordance with OHSAS 18001: 2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems - Requirements, which is based on the Plan-Do-Check -Act (PDCA) methodology (see Figure 1). In the Plan stage, the University will define its safety and health policies, objectives and programmes. In the Do stage, these programmes will be implemented in the various University Units (Research Institutes/Centres, Faculties, Departments, Offices). In the Check stage, the SMS@NUS will require the operational status of these programmes to be verified objectively to ensure there are achieving the University objectives. In the Act stage, the necessary preventive and corrective actions will be taken.
