NUS Safety & Health Improvement Programme (SHIP) 2010
“Sailing to New Horizons of Safety Improvement and Innovation”
The NUS Safety and Health Improvement Programme (SHIP) is aimed at empowering NUS staff with the motivation to bring about improvements in some aspects of their workplace safety and health through teamwork. Through this process the department/research institute is able to improve their safety performance.
SHIP rewards all safety improvement projects, as long as they contribute to the department in meeting its annual safety and health objectives, targets and programmes. The link between department’s SHIP, programmes and objectives is given graphically below:
Departments are therefore encouraged to align their SHIP projects to their NUS ASPHA submissions. More information about NUS ASPHA can be found at the following website: http://www.nus.edu.sg/osh/programmes/promotion/innovation.htm
The objectives of SHIP are as follow:
Ensure department safety and health objectives are met
Promote job involvement and employee motivation
Enhance safety standard in NUS
Promote more effective teamwork
Improve safety and health communication within NUS
Strengthen management-employee relationship
Understanding risk assessment process
NUS staff will also stand to benefit through:

Participating Rules and Regulations:
- This competition is open to NUS departments and research institutes.
- This competition is not open to all Safety and Health Professionals of NUS, and staff of Office of Safety, Health & Environment.
- When a project is submitted for SHIP, it cannot be submitted for Safetymation and vice versa.
- SHIP Teams should have at least 2 to a maximum of 8 persons per team. They should preferably be from the same work area and face common safety and health problems.
- Each SHIP team within the Department, Research Institute should submit a single application. The submission must be done by the leader of the SHIP team.
- Inter-departmental teams are allowed but there must be a common area of work between members in the team. Safety committees can also take part in this award.
- The teams can work on one major project that leads towards an overall improvement in safety and health in their workplace. The projects must be proposed to the management in their respective faculties/ departments and the results should be measurable if possible. The same projects cannot be submitted for another promotional programme organized by Office of Safety, Health & Environment.
- Teams must have regular meetings that are minuted and OSHE will provide refreshment allowance for every meeting held. The teams will submit a report at the end of the competition and they will present their findings to a panel of judges.
The judging criteria can be downloaded here:
- Your project MUST strictly focus on areas related to Occupational Safety and Health.
- Projects must be aligned to departmental annual safety and health objectives and programmes.
- Applications should contain relevant supporting documentation (photographs, reports, records, procedures, etc) to assist the judges in their assessment.
- OSHE, on behalf of the judges, may require the DSC to provide additional supporting documentation.
- The judge's decision is final and no correspondence would be entertained. The winning project will be announced during the NUS Annual Award Ceremony 2010, which will be held in March 2010.
