One challenge I face in [faculty development] is finding effective ways to convince faculty to continually develop themselves as teachers.

Melyvn TAN is from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. As an Assistant Director involved in faculty development work, his primary role is to work with faculty to improve student learning experiences and achieve better student learning outcomes. He does this by conducting workshops and coaching faculty in curriculum development, pedagogical and assessment design. In addition, he oversees the university’s teaching assistants’ programme which aims to develop PhD students as future faculty. A challenge he faces in his work is finding effective ways to convince faculty to continually develop themselves as teachers. He is currently reading the literature surrounding the development of communities of practice and critical networks as he is working on a proposal to incorporate peer learning into the Foundations of University Teaching and Learning Course for junior faculty at NTU.
