Temasek Defence Systems Institute (TDSI), founded in 2001 as a joint venture between National University of Singapore (NUS) and U.S. Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), has served as one of the key manpower training and talent development nodes for the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) in realising its transformation to the third-generation Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) that is high-tech, systems-centric, and lean.
The flagship degree programme of TDSI, the Master of Defence Technology and Systems (MDTS) Programme was launched in 2002 to fulfill our aspiration to offer a premier postgraduate programme for Singapore’s defence community. The programme is delivered by colleagues from NUS, staff from NPS and practitioners from the defence community in Singapore. Today, more than 300 alumni from this programme hold key appointments in the defence community. The partnership has expanded to include the Air Force Institute of Technology in the US and Cranfield University in the UK to offer unparalleled breadth and depth in our curriculum. Over the years, TDSI has also provided more than $17 million of research funding to nearly 80 projects locally and in NPS. All these are made possible by the unwavering support of MINDEF and the defense community, the unrelenting effort by the staff of TDSI and the hard work of our students, past and present, in flying our flag high and proud beyond our shores.
The challenge ahead for TDSI is to be adept in fulfilling its mission and commitment to the defence community in Singapore by constantly renewing itself and plugging into the bigger international network to keep up with the transformation of the SAF. Moving forward, TDSI will promote the systems engineering aspect of its programme to other organisations in Singapore. Together with the greater community, TDSI will play its role in our pledge to “achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our nation”.
