NUS has launched the NUS Sustainable Futures (NUS SF), a whole-of-university initiative, that brings together expertise from across its research ecosystem to advance interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaborations in addressing climate change challenges. NUS SF will adopt a mission-driven, problem-solving approach by converging NUS researchers to collaborate across sustainability domains, as well as with stakeholders including industry and government partners both locally and across Asia.

As part of its 120th anniversary celebrations, the University hosted NUS120: Our Global Story — a cultural fiesta. Held at the Central Library Atrium, the event featured performances from across cultures, an international food bazaar, and a compelling showcase that garnered multiple stories from students, staff, and alumni around the world, reflecting the diversity and spirit that make up the NUS community.

Classic fables like Goldilocks and the Three Bears that feature anthropomorphised animals, or animals with human traits, have entertained children for centuries while aiming to teach moral values. But just how effective are these stories in instilling virtues? NUS psychologist Assoc Prof Ding Xiao Pan led a study involving more than 200 Singaporean children to determine if such moral tales are effective in teaching children honesty.
Research
A book titled “The Camphor Tree and the Elephant: Religion and Ecological Change in Maritime Southeast Asia” by historian Dr Faizah Zakaria has claimed the prestigious annual “Harry J. Benda Prize (First book on Southeast Asian Studies)” by the Southeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies. Established in 1977, the Prize honours books that make exceptional contributions to the understanding of Southeast Asia.

The kampung spirit isn’t bound by borders – it’s about building connections wherever we go, according to a recent insightful study by NUS researchers Prof Elaine Ho, Assoc Prof Vincent Chua and Assoc Prof Feng Chen-Chieh. Although Singapore’s policy emphasis to date has been on promoting ageing in place to allow seniors to thrive, the study found that the social networks of seniors are not just confined to their neighbourhoods but extend to other parts of the island.
A research team, including Asst Prof Zoe Hildon from the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, examined patterns of antibiotic use among pet owners. The study revealed that three out of four pet owners in Singapore are unaware that antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be transmitted between humans and animals. The findings highlight the need for increased education and outreach – not only for pet owners but also for healthcare professionals such as vets.
