A groundbreaking study led by linguists from the Department of English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies (ELTS) at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), and conducted together with researchers from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine)has found that early linguistic signs of dementia can be detected through the study of the natural speech of senior Singaporeans.
Research
NUS has received a philanthropic gift from the family of the late Mrs Gloria Lee Woo, founder of stock brokerage Kim Eng Holdings, that will go towards advancing healthy longevity initiatives in the Health District @ Queenstown, a multi-stakeholder, whole-of-society endeavour. In appreciation of their generosity, NUS has established the Gloria Lee Woo Award, which will support initiatives focused on mental and social well-being, and Malay female caregivers.

Professor Liu Xiaogang from the NUS Department of Chemistry has been named winner of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Centenary Prize, the only winner from Asia among this year’s three recipients. Prof Liu won the prize for outstanding contributions to the understanding and optical manipulation of photon conversion in nanocrystals and their applications in X-ray and light-field imaging, and for excellence in communication.

Environmental, social, and governance (‘ESG’) reporting is increasingly practiced by companies in order to pursue environmental goals. Mr Mark Ortega, Teaching Assistant at the NUS Faculty of Law, shares his insights on the need to support ESG reporting with caution and judiciousness, as well as the importance of keeping its investor-centric goals and environmental & social-centric goals separate to prevent the former from overshadowing the latter.
