One Year and One Term
By Heng Hwee Leng
The Accountancy intake of 1979 spent just one year and one term in BT as Joint Campus. Then we were moved to Kent Ridge in the middle of our second year as NUS. BT was much cosier with a stronger community spirit. The Accountancy and BizAd campus run in my first year was such a great bonding event for all of us freshmen. Tutorials in the Nissen huts were where students courted. And the canteen in the SU house was where students hung out to meet, chat and bond. Moving to Kent Ridge felt disruptive, disjointed and to some extent, disaffected, especially when some years later, Accountancy got hived off to NTU. It still feels as if NUS didn't really want us. Joint Campus had no meaning as a name, but the time in BT remains a very fond memory of a student community that relished the joy of being undergraduates discovering new lives and new directions.
