CELC Seminar on the rhetoric of Filipina suffragists held on 6 November 2024
Dr. Mary Dorothy Jose, NUS Fellow, conducted a seminar at CELC based on her research on the rhetoric of the Filipina suffragists in the early 20th century. The seminar titled “Homemaking as a Civic Duty: Contestations on the Role of Filipino Women on the Debate on Suffrage” was held at the CELC Hybrid Room on November 6, from 3 to 4:30 pm, and was attended both in person and online by colleagues from the Centre and other universities in Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Dr. Jose’s paper critically examines the conceptualizations of Filipina women by the suffragists in order to advocate for women’s right to vote. Using relevant frameworks from rhetorical and critical discourse studies, Dr. Jose demonstrates how critical analysis of language use and rhetorical strategies can illuminate our understanding of historical texts and events. Her current research adds to her body of work on women’s studies and Philippine history.
A recipient of a grant under the NUS Fellowship Programme (Southeast Asia), Dr. Jose, an Associate Professor of History at the University of the Philippines Manila, has served as a fellow at CELC since January 2024 under the supervision of Dr. Gene Segarra Navera. She completes her fellowship in December 2024.
