On November 16th Tim Groombridge and Lee Gek Ling conducted a 90-minute workshop entitled How to Give Critical Feedback Without Anyone Losing Face. The workshop took place in the Central Library Training Room and was the fourth presentation overseen by the Oral Communication Committee from CELC. In total, there were nineteen participants, and as has been the case in other workshops both staff and students were present, roughly in equal numbers. Participants responded well to the practice activities and models that the presenters enacted. The focus was on both work and study situations, in which critical feedback has the potential to damage an individual’s public persona. Alternating pairs took on roles such as supervisor and employee or as students making requests of one another in order to practice politeness markers.
