ZHU Shenfa first graduated from Harbin Normal University, China, in 1986. After teaching in his alma mater for eight years, he was awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Education, Singapore, to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in English Language Teaching in the National Institute of Education, Singapore. In 1997, he was awarded a Master of Arts in English language by the National University of Singapore and, in the following year, a research scholarship leading to his degree of Doctor of Philosophy in phonetics and phonology.

Dr Zhu's research interests lie in phonetics and phonology, contrastive and translation studies of English and Chinese, teaching English and Chinese as a foreign/second language, and the features of Singapore English and Singapore Mandarin.
