Electrical appliances keep us company, coming to life at the flick of a switch. A computer, a fridge, a microwave oven, a lamp and a television – old essential items that once stood pride of place in our homes as we used them in our daily lives.

#

By repurposing these disused objects into light-controlled planters that grow edible plants, this exhibition invites viewers to relate to them in a new way. What was once an object to fulfil our instant needs now beckons us to care for it each day. A timely reminder of the ways we can transform our living environment by valuing the everyday.

About the group

We are a group of final year Electrical Engineering students embarking on our Final Year Project (FYP) on “Enhanced Plant Growth by Light Treatment in Localized Air-conditioned Environment”. This is our first partnership with NUS Centre For the Arts (CFA), and our first time participating in the NUS Arts Festival.

Our FYP focuses on exploring how plants respond to different light intensities, spectrum, shining duration, and temperature in order to obtain the most optimal conditions for growth. We will be incorporating our research results into the light and temperature environment that we are using for our displays.

Wong Jessie

Jessie is a Year 4 NUS undergraduate majoring in Electrical Engineering. She is a cheerful and fun-loving individual who loves to travel, cook, eat, and conduct mini photoshoots with her neighbourhood cats. She also has an interest in the arts and loves spending time touring around art galleries.

Lim Yu Wei, Jeremy

Jeremy is a Year 4 NUS undergraduate with a major in Electrical Engineering. He’s a fan of the works of Yayoi Kusama and loves decorating with balloons. You can often see him in the same outfit so it's not difficult to spot him.

Hup Jing Si

Jing Si is a Year 4 Electrical Engineering undergrad. She also spends her time training for the NUS Canoe Polo team. When she is not training or studying, her time will be spent on other hobbies such as crochet, drawing and piano. When she took on this FYP and art festival project, she was really worried as plants don’t really thrive under her (a cactus died under her care).

Poon Si Ying, Averil

Averil is a Year 4 NUS undergraduate with a major in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Social Services. Most of her free time is dedicated to NUS Canoe Polo, which she has been part of since Year 1. When she is not occupied with school work or extra-curriculum activities, she loves to spend time at home gardening. The plant that she is the proudest of is her Chinese Spinach… which she has since harvested and eaten.
