As part of Centre For the Arts’ vision to nurture creative minds and inquiring spirits, the NUS Arts Festival presents Critical Conversations – a series of talks, interactive workshops and panel discussions aimed at deepening discourse and engagement with the festival theme in connection with the arts and topical issues.

The pandemic has exacerbated many aspects of life which we previously took for granted – our mental well-being and the stability of our arts freelancers amongst many others. While these issues may seem like “old news”, there is still much to be done to find restoration in these areas. How can the arts be a space for renewal and hope even as we still grapple with self-doubt, fear and rising costs? Through Critical Conversations , audiences are encouraged to take time to reflect on these concerns together and through active dialogue, and find convergences in the spaces between.

Spaces Between – Arts and Labour

Self-Employed People, or freelancers, make up a huge part of the local arts workforce. Yet we often relate freelancing to instability and that it’s not an ideal career path to pursue. How then, do SEPs work around the limitations they face in their line of work?

At this roundtable session, we explore how freelancers can better protect and care for themselves. What are some areas that support may be lacking, or require clarity in for the self-employed person? How can we be creative and work around the existing support to ensure efficient and effective use of the resources that we have available?

Roundtable of speakers: Assistant Professor Senhu Wang, Jasmin Wong, Ma Yanling, Weish, Tan E-Reng. Moderated by Professor Audrey Yue.
