Research interests

Annabel’s research focuses on applying the principles of spatial prioritisation and systematic conservation planning to inform carbon-inclusive protected area decision-making in Southeast Asia. To this end, she is working on optimising methods for estimating and monitoring the region’s carbon stocks.

Biography

Annabel is a PhD student at the Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions, with a background in conservation ecology, geospatial modelling and science communication. Her previous research includes systematic conservation planning to safeguard dipterocarp forests under projected future climate change, as well as exploratory studies on eco-friendly antifouling solutions, for which she received the EXPLORE! Young Marine Scientist Research Award.

In the realm of co-curriculars, Annabel was a Core Team member of the NUS Environmental Biology Interest Group (EVBig) and a member of NUS Toddycats, where she regularly engaged the public and study body through nature walks, symposiums and seminars. She also served as NUS Special Programme in Science (SPS) Head Mentor from 2021-2022, imparting a passion for interdisciplinary thinking and learning to her mentees.

She delivered the valedictory speech on behalf of the 2022 graduating cohort of Life Sciences students, and has been awarded the Navjot Sodhi Prize (2022), the Straits Times Bronze Medal (2022) and the Malayan Nature Society Silver Medal (2021).
