SafeSim Hazards
Collaborators
This project was done in collaboration with the Department of Building, National University of Singapore.
Overview
Training simulation to help construction site supervisors identify hazards and safe practices.
Background
Safety is a number one priority for the construction industry, and the means whereby supervisors have been taught how to spot safety lapse, hazards and good practices has been lacking. It it untenable to replicate these hazards in real life, so supervisors have been primarily trained through textbook means. The retention and application of knowledge through such means cannot be easily measured. With an interactive, repeatable simulation, we can train and assess supervisors in a safe environment, while ensuring that they actively learn from the experience.
Key Problem(s)
Training for construction site supervisors were primarily done through slides or books, and could not be replicated in real life due to safety risks involved.
Objective
SafeSim aims to help train construction site supervisors to recognize and identify safety hazards and good practices in a safe, repeatable environment. SafeSim can be used for both training and assessment, and can be run in either modes for this purpose.
Solution
SafeSim is a training simulator modelled after real life scenarios, presented in first-person mode. The main means of identifying safety hazards and good practices is through an “in-game camera”, where players will navigate a construction site to take pictures of suspected safety hazards or lapses. Players will then be required to specify their reasons behind taking the photo from a list of multiple choice questions, to ensure they are not simply going around taking random shots. Players are scored at the end of the simulation, and explanations on their answers and the ones they missed will be given (during the game, for training mode, and during the review, for assessment mode).
The training simulator presents an interactive learning setting, and provides an immersive and realistic, yet safe and repeatable environment for learners to learn. It provides both training and assessment modes, so the performance of the learners can be automatically measured in less invasive means.
Deployment and Usage
SafeSim Hazards has been licensed and used by Right Construction Pte Ltd for actual training since 2018.
Impact
With this simulator, we can train many supervisors quickly, in a safe, repeatable environment, and benchmark their understanding of the training material against standards, and even amongst peers. This would bring about greater understanding of safety in the actual construction sites, and generally increase the safety levels in the actual deployment grounds.
