Singapore Heritage Trails

Collaborators

This project was done in collaboration with the National Heritage Board.

Overview

Consolidating Singapore's heritage trails through crowdsourcing into a single, mobile platform.

Background

Traditional marketing and promotion of heritage trails in Singapore involved the use of paper brochures, often limited to a single trail per brochure. This led to unnecessary wastage of paper material, and difficulties in reaching to audience at large easily. The National Heritage Board (NHB) had made several standalone mobile apps consisting of single trails, but sought for a more robust solution in showcasing all of Singapore's heritage. A collaboration was hence formed between CUTE Center and NHB to create Singapore Heritage Trails (SG Trails).

Key Problem(s)

There was no known solution that combined all of Singapore's heritage trails into a single platform.

Objective

SG Trails aims to consolidate all of Singapore's heritage trails into a single mobile application, with information pulled from both official sources (the National Heritage Board) as well as the general public. By leveraging on crowdsourcing tools, the app also seeks to contain memories belonging to the general public that may not be captured through official sources, further enhancing a user's experience and understanding of trails in Singapore.

Solution

SG Trails allows users to explore a plethora of trails gaining a better understanding of Singapore's heritage along the way. Users can also craft their own trails for the general public to view and use as well. The app was the first known mobile application that contained all of Singapore's heritage, crafted into mostly walkable trails that visitors could explore and follow along with the app's features.

Deployment and Usage

SG Trails was released to public use in May 2016.

Impact

SG Trails reached a combined total of 30,000 downloads across both iOS and Android platforms.
