Overview
Online breast oncoplastic surgery learning tool for Medicine students.
Background
Oncoplastic breast conserving surgery can have a steep learning curve and successful training demands time, organization, resources and mentorship. Various alternate tools to teach oncoplastic breast conserving surgery are available, but each have their own limitations -- single-use anatomical models, expensive cadavers, lack of hands-on components in textbooks and videos. We seek to find a cost-effective solution that is reusable by students to aid in their learning.
Key Problem(s)
There is no known virtual simulator for the training of oncoplastic breast conserving surgery.
Objective
Virtual Breast Oncoplastic Surgery Simulator (VBOSS) aims to expose students to the wide variety of surgical procedures used on tumors at different positions of the breast while simulating some hands-on practice, enhancing their understanding in the process. VBOSS aims to complement other forms of learning already in place for students.
Solution
VBOSS is a web-based training tool created to complement current teaching tools to overcome some of the existing limitations. It is the first known virtual simulator for oncoplastic breast conserving surgery training, to the best of our knowledge.
Deployment and Usage
VBOSS will be deployed for pilot testing in early 2020.
