NERI Seminar on Jan 17, 2024 by Dr Loh Wei Hao: Electro-Disinfection and Reuse of Water Resources in Urban Farming
We are excited to share that Dr. Loh Wei Hao, a Research Fellow at the NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI), is making significant strides in sustainable urban farming practices. He works with Assoc Prof Olivier Lefebvre from NUS Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering on promoting electro-disinfection and water reuse in urban farming. His recent presentation at the NERI Seminar Series on January 17, 2024, showcased promising results from pilot testing the electro-disinfection system. The electro-disinfection system demonstrated high efficacy in coliform bacteria removal, coupled with minimal energy consumption and maintenance requirements to enable the reuse of hydroponic water for the growth of leafy greens.
The team's innovative approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also holds tremendous potential for sustainable water resource management in urban agriculture. Ongoing testing is underway to determine the long-term feasibility of integrating this electro-disinfection system into urban farming practices.
The project team is actively seeking collaborations with industry partners to scale up the process and make a meaningful impact on urban farming practices. For further details, please contact Assoc Prof Olivier Lefebvre.
