Provost’s Chair Professor of Computer Science, Director, NUS AI Institute and Deputy Executive Chairman, AI Singapore
Professor Mohan Kankanhalli is the Deputy Executive Chairman of AI Singapore, which is Singapore’s National AI R&D Program. He is also the Provost's Chair Professor of Computer Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS).
He was formerly the Dean of the NUS School of Computing from 2016 to 2022. Prior to becoming the Dean, he was the NUS Vice Provost (Graduate Education) from 2014-2016 and Associate Provost (Graduate Education) from 2011-2013. He was earlier a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and a researcher at the Institute of Systems Science of NUS. Prof Kankanhalli obtained his BTech from IIT Kharagpur and MS and PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Prof Kankanhalli’s research interests are in computer vision, multimedia computing, and information security and privacy. He is deeply interested in the intersection of technology, society, and digital trust. His research contributions are in image and video understanding, multimodal fusion, visual saliency as well as in content authentication, privacy and trustworthy AI. As Director of the NUS Centre for Research in Privacy Technologies (N-CRiPT), he leads initiatives on multimedia privacy and trustworthy machine learning. He also holds leadership roles in multimedia computing, including Senior Editor of the ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing journal and the Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Multimedia magazine.
Prof Kankanhalli is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on the Future of Artificial Intelligence.
Prof Kankanhalli is a Fellow of theInstitute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AIAA) and the Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS).
