Graduate Coursework Programme in Clinical Research

Overview

The Master of Clinical Investigation (MCI) is a two-year programme which aims to equip physicians and allied health professionals with basic methodological and practical skills to enable design and execution of clinical investigations compatible with international standards. The MCI programme also provides excellent foundation for those aiming to pursue advanced clinical research training, including PhD degree programmes. The course is structured to accommodate the need for physicians to balance clinical work with programme participation, where coursework is concentrated in two rounds of 6 weeks’ intensive training, covering the range of skills necessary to design and conduct clinical trials.

Degree Requirements

For physicians

An MBBS or equivalent degree from an internationally-recognised medical school or university
Physicians who have entered specialist training or residency programme
Aptitude for clinical research at the international level

For allied health professionals

Internationally-recognised qualification in their profession
At least three years of professional practice experience
Aptitude for clinical research at the international level

Curriculum Structure

The MCI programme offers students training over a candidature period of two years, with possibility to extend to a maximum of three years if more time is required for their research component. The 40-modular credit (MC) programme structure comprises 9 modules (32 MCs) for coursework (80%) and a research component (20%) of 8 MCs. For the research component, students are expected to develop and conduct their own research projects in their clinical disciplines under the guidance of a mentor group comprising established clinical investigators and statistical experts with advanced experience in clinical research.

Master of Medicine

The Master of Medicine offered by the Division is based on two to four years of clinical training in approved training hospitals. Assessments are based on multi-format examinations and generally taken by doctors during their training (known as Residency Training) towards becoming specialists.

The Master of Medicine degree is offered in the following specialties/disciplines:

The DGMS also offers short one-to-two-week examination preparatory courses to specifically help candidates prepare for their examinations. These courses are offered for certain specialty and more information can be found on the website. Any doctor may enrol although priority may be given to those taking the examinations.

Graduate Diploma Programmes

Master of Science (Speech and Language Pathology)

The Master of Science (Speech and Language Pathology) programme is a two-year professional qualification course designed for graduates from any discipline who seek careers as Speech and Language Therapists. Students will be equipped to work with children and adults who have speech, language, swallowing, voice, and fluency disorders. The curriculum includes an emphasis on the unique communication needs of bilingual and multicultural populations. Problem-based learning, with local case studies, provides the foundation for the academic courses. Students also complete a research project relevant to evidence-based practice and have opportunities to work with a range of children and adults over four clinical placements. Past cohorts have successfully joined social service organisations, schools, hospitals, and private centres upon graduation.

Master of Science (Audiology)

This graduate-entry programme addresses the public demand for locally trained Audiologists. It is the only coursework-based study of its kind in Singapore and is offered in collaboration with the University of Melbourne. It is customised with a distinct Asian framework and distinguishes itself from other programmes by incorporating a multi-disciplinary approach with related courses covering psychology, public health, engineering, business and innovation. Students are given the opportunity to integrate academics, clinical practice and research, which will be carried out in a purpose-built facility, clinic and in collaboration with government research institutes, universities, industry and international partners.

Graduate Coursework Programme in Nursing

Overview

The Master of Nursing (MN) programme was established to meet a national need to equip nurses with advanced knowledge and skills for clinical management of patients and to enhance the use of research findings as the basis of effective practice.

Students receive advanced clinical knowledge, skills and acquired professional attitude from a range of disciplines in advanced nursing practice, clinical medicine, social sciences and public health. Students acquire and apply learnt knowledge and skills also in clinical practice settings.

Upon successful completion of the 18-month Master of Nursing programme, graduates are eligible to apply for APN provisional license with the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB) to continue with a 12-month integrated internship. APN certification will be issued upon completing the 12-month integrated internship and fulfilling the SNB requirements.

Aims of the Programme

The programme aims to prepare graduate nurses to:

attain SNB’s Core Competencies for APN;
be a reflective, safe, and competent APN who exercise informed clinical judgment in the delivery of evidence-based care that will improve patient outcomes;
act as agents of change for health care reform and health care industry; and
pursue lifelong learning through professional development.

Programme Structure

The MN is offered on a full-time basis over 18 months. It consists of 70 MCs, with 40 MCs for theoretical modules and 30 MCs for the clinical practicum.
