Q01. With regard to the SS modules, since candidates are only required to take one SS module throughout their candidature, why is there a distinction in the modules by level? Does that mean that if we have not completed Level-1000 modules, we are not allowed to take Level-2000 modules, or does it mean that the first year students can only attempt Level-1000 modules SS modules?

As Singapore Studies modules are cross-listed with modules offered by various departments they have to be pegged at the same level as the respective modules. Students may attempt any module they wish for Singapore Studies.

Q02. If we are allowed to pursue more than one SS module, can it be used to fulfill the University Level Requirement?

Yes. Additional Singapore Studies (SS) modules may be taken to satisfy Breadth if the SS requirement has already been satisfied and the SS Modules are outside the student's home Faculty/School.

Please note that for FASS, only additional SS modules which are NOT cross-listed with the students' major(s) can count towards UE requirements.

Q03. I would like to know if I am allowed to take a SS module, which is cross-listed with my exposure module or major?

The SS module that you read may be cross-listed as an exposure module. However, you may only read the module once, i.e. only as an exposure module or as a SS module. The SS module must be outside of your major.

Q04. Is it alright to take an SS module that is cross-listed with my intended major?

The SS module should be outside of your major.

Q05. I am unclear over the S/U options on GEM/SSM.

For students admitted before AY2014/15

Student can declare 12 MCs as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (taking into account the limits specified in the case of students registered in Student Exchange programmes) in any modules except those being counted towards programme, that is, faculty and major requirements.

Q06. May I major in Singapore Studies?

No, Singapore Studies is not offered as a major.

Q07. May I read a stand alone Singapore Studies module that is offered by my major?

Yes, you may. As long as the module is not cross-listed with a module code from your major(s), you may read the module to fulfill your Singapore Studies requirement.

Q08. When should I opt to read a SS module?

Do it as soon as possible; don't wait till your final year before deciding to fulfill your SS requirement.

Given that there is a CA component, every module is likely to have either a mid-term test or essay or project or some combination of these.

Q10. I am a year 2 student from science faculty. I have taken GEK1008 as GEM under group B in my 1st semester of year 1. After I have taken this module as GEM, I found that it could be taken as Singapore Studies too. By the time I discover this, it was already too late for me to drop this module and take it as Singapore Studies. I sincerely hope that you can do me a favor by allowing me to convert this GEM to Singapore Studies.
