'I cannot be who I am not and cannot teach what I do not practise.'

I am a social worker. I am an educator. I am a social work educator. But what does this mean?

Being a social worker means the strive towards facilitating the change process in helping individuals to maximise their potential, as well as supporting the marginalised and disadvantaged communities to be empowered.

Being an educator means providing students with an optimal learning environment where they feel safe to question and be curious. In the process of developing a critical mind, it is hoped that students would discover their ‘personal’ and ‘professional’ self and find a better ‘fit’ with their career choices and life goals.

Being a social work educator means that I seek every opportunity to facilitate the learning process for students to develop their potential through a more holistic educational experience. I seek to develop students’ sense of curiosity towards learning and deepen their critical thinking through experiential and reflective process.

It is in being congruent with ‘who’ I am as a social work educator that I can teach and practise simultaneously, with great pleasure.
