Learning to Improve

How can educational institutions ‘get better at getting better’? In his lecture, Prof. Anthony S. Bryk shows that in order to respond adequately to this question, we need to first answer three other queries: What specifically are we trying to accomplish? What change(s) might we introduce and why? How will we know if a change is an improvement? These questions urge us to identify the major problems that prevent institutions from developing strategies that will refine the educational system. The speaker suggest six guidelines that play crucial roles in improving the quality of learning of students, educators, and institutions. Taken together, these principles enable learning by fostering safe environments for participants to share, serve as an enormous source of innovation, and help discern patterns in situations which otherwise look idiosyncratic. Prof. Anthony S. Bryk illustrates his ideas with a range of revealing examples from real teaching-learning contexts.
