To help students achieve mathematical competency - the ability to judge the validity of mathematical arguments, to formulate mathematical arguments rigorously and to generalize mathematical concepts.

Biodata

Received his B.Sc. (Hons) degree from the National University of Singapore and his Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been teaching in the Department of Mathematics, NUS for more than 10 years. A/P Tan’s research interests are on Algebra and Number Theory. He has also keen interest in using IT in Mathematical teaching. 

A/P Tan has been the Honorary Secretary of the Singapore Mathematical Society for the past few years. He has also conducted mathematical enrichment programmes in many schools.

Teaching Strengths

  • Employs various technologies, live demonstrations and analogies to help students comprehend math concepts and their physical meanings
  • Uses IT extensively for teaching such as Integrated Virtual Learning Environment (IVLE) and animations; also manages a Discussion Forum to facilitate interaction among students and to encourage self-learning
  • Developed a web-based component “Virtual lab” which allows students to use web tools anytime anywhere to explore and visualise concepts learnt in class
