ES5000 - Graduate English I

Description

How is academic writing different from other forms of writing? How can graduate students use writing and speaking to become respected members of their academic communities? This course provides an opportunity for you to explore academic English and the communication skills you will need to be a successful graduate student at NUS in the age of generative AI. You will develop your foundational academic English language reading, writing and speaking skills so you can successfully integrate into your discipline-specific academic community.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Evaluate and use academic English accurately and appropriately in various contexts
  • Analyze the purpose, organizational patterns and language features of a variety of academic texts
  • Write well-structured paragraphs and essays using specific organizational strategies
  • Integrate ideas from published sources appropriately into written and spoken academic texts

  • Continuous Assessment 100%

Prerequisites

Only students who have taken the Diagnostic English Test and received a ‘Band 1’ result are allowed to take this course.
