EM1201 - English for Academic Purposes (Music) 1
Description
This is a required course for students in the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM) whose YSTCM English Placement Test results show that they need a course in English for Academic Purposes to help them meet the writing demands of their other courses.
This course is in part fulfilment of the University's English language requirements. Students assigned to this course must pass it in order to graduate.
This course is taught over 1 semester with 2 two-hour sectional teachings per week.
Objectives
This course aims to help students:
- write organized paragraphs (descriptive, defining/categorizing, comparison-contrast);
- express clearly through awareness of grammar;
- develop reading comprehension and vocabulary skills with a specific focus on music-related expository texts;
- use strategies for reading, vocabulary building, paraphrasing and summarizing texts; and
- gain confidence in expressing ideas (in English) in small group settings.
Assessment
- EM1201 is a 100% Continuous Assessment course
Prerequisites
This course is open only to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Music programme. Students who score ‘Band C’ in the YSTCM Placement Test or students who have passed EM1002, Foundation English Course 2, are required to read this course.
