NUS Arts Festival 2016 saw the birth of Sambhavna — a bold experiment to capture the complexity of quantum physics through traditional Indian dance, initiated and created by Cultural Medallion recipient Santha Bhaskar.

In Sambhvana 2.0, NUS Indian Dance will push boundaries even further in a full-length work that weaves the delicate movements of classical Indian Bharatanatyam, fundamental concepts of quantum physics and the richness of language in spoken text, in such a way that an understanding of quantum theory that could previously only be comprehended by the brain can be accessed differently and experienced through the various senses.

In partnership with the Centre for Quantum Technologies (NUS), Sambhavna 2.0 features Singapore-based independent interdisciplinary artist Kiran Kumar who works with Mrs Bhaskar for the first time.

NUS Indian Dance

Established in 1977, NUS Indian Dance is a close-knit group of highly committed dancers that welcomes dancers into a dance family where growth and learning is encouraged. The group is faithfully guided by its Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, Mrs Santha Bhaskar, a pioneer in the Indian cultural dance scene and Cultural Medallion recipient.

NUS Indian Dance pursues excellence in two styles of Indian dance –bharathanatyam and kathak– through rigorous and demanding training sessions aimed at maintaining high standards of performance. Dancers not only hone their dance skills but develop a deeper sense of self-confidence and cultural identity through their exploration of contemporary themes and concepts in every production.

Santha Bhaskar

Artistic Director & Resident Choreographer

A Cultural Medallion recipient (1990) for dance in Singapore, Santha Bhaskar is known for her distinctive choreography style and was awarded the Public Service Star (BBM), by the Singapore Government.on National Day 2016 as well. She is also the Artistic Director of Bhaskar's Arts Academy.

A versatile choreographer, she has staged numerous productions from dance dramas to contemporary works in classical Indian dance as well as cross-cultural and experimental forms reflecting the unique Singapore identity. Over the years she has imbibed various influences such as Chinese, Malay, Thai and western dance styles in her choreography.

Kiran Kumar

Kiran Kumar is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher. His work focuses on the intersection of artistic and scientific modes of articulation within dance and somatic practice.

His artistic works have ranged from performance, video, installation and exhibition, to writing and archiving. His research projects have been supported by the National Arts Council Singapore's Research and Development Grant and the Volkswagen Foundation's (Germany) Arts and Science in Motion program.

Following initial study in mechanical engineering at the National University of Singapore, Kiran holds an MFA in new media art from City University of Hong Kong and an MA in dance from the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin. Currently, he is Associate Member at the Graduate School in the University of Arts Berlin.
