DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Osman Abdul Hamid
Artistic Director
Pengabdian Batin, contrary to its connotation of enslavement, has been a journey of emancipation for myself and the team. Every dance production by NUS Ilsa Tari comes with its own hurdles that must be overcome before arriving at the final product on stage.
And with every production, the hurdle seems to grow. The challenge is to always create something better and bigger than the last. Pengabdian Batin has not been without its own unique circumstances. An attempt at narrating the issue of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), it proved challenging given the sensitivity of the topic and my lack of direct personal experience with it. The issue deals heavily with abstract mental and emotional dimensions that are difficult to translate into body movement and especially Malay Dance. In that regard, I would like to express my highest gratitude to NUS Ilsa Tari. To the Executive Committee for their dedication to the research work and preparation that have ultimately shaped this show. And to the members and alumni for collectively being part of the creative process and realising our artistic vision for the show. My heartfelt appreciation also goes to NUS Dikir Barat for enabling me to experiment with the fusion of the different cultural art forms and add unique layers to what would have been a typical dance production. The process has been a liberating one for us, having pushed us to move away from convention. We would like to invite our distinguished viewers to be part of this experience. We ask that you step into the theatre with an open mind and seek to be free of the shackles of stigma and negative presumptions towards victims of an issue that itself hardly receives much attention. We hope that you enjoy the show and, more importantly, walk away with a greater sense of understanding and empathy.
Pengabdian Batin(Malay for Inner Enslavement) is a contemporary Malay Dance production by NUS Ilsa Tari, featuring NUS Dikir Barat, that seeks to explore the experiences of survivors of Intimate Partner Violence amongst the Malay/Muslim community.
SYNOPSIS
Pengabdian Batin (Inner Enslavement), featuring NUS Dikir Barat, is presented by NUS Ilsa Tari as the latest iteration of our annual dance production as part of the NUS Arts Festival 2023. Revolving specifically around the trope of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) involving heterosexual structures within the local Malay/Muslim community, the show is an attempt at crafting a factually accurate and informed narrative on the issue that remains comprehensible.
We have sought to achieve this by referring to existing literature and consulting relevant experts in the field. A novel fusion of contemporary Malay Dance and Dikir Barat acts as the medium of storytelling to provide a resonating and moving experience. It is our sincere hope that audiences will leave our show with a heightened sense of awareness of the issue as well as a greater consciousness inclined towards enacting positive change in their own capacities.

Originally known as NUS Malay Dance Group under the direction of its founding tutor Mr Abdul Rahman Mawari, the group had their first performance at the NUS Welcome Convention in July 1986 at the NUS Forum. In May 1995, NUS Malay Dance Group was renamed NUS Ilsa Tari by its current Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer Osman Abdul Hamid.
The word ‘Ilsa’ is derived from the Malay word ‘Asli’ to mean native, which signifies a bold new artistic direction for radical creativity in Malay Dance while acknowledging the importance of the past. Establishing strong foundations in traditional Malay Dance forms such as Zapin, Ronggeng, Inang and Serampang 12, together with the traditional Malay martial art of Silat, NUS Ilsa Tari experiments with both traditional and contemporary Malay Dance to push the boundaries of creativity and modernity. Today, NUS Ilsa Tari plays an important part in the evolution of Malay Dance forms relevant to our times by practice, discourse, performance and engagement with the next generation of artists.
