DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

"What is this 'liminal space' thing?" a friend asked me. "I can't find it in the Oxford Dictionary" If you are unfamiliar with the term, a liminal space is a threshold or boundary, a place that exists between two worlds, a place of transformation and change, where new ideas and experiences can emerge.
These concepts resonated with our student members, some of whom are graduating from the world of study into the world of work, and all of whom are experiencing transformation and change. Over the months, we explored physical liminal spaces (corridors, stairways, hallways, airports) and took audio recordings, video recordings, and still photos. We also practised electronic music techniques for expressing their feelings of liminality, such as sampling, sound design, and audio processing. Tonight, as you walk through the liminal space(s) that make up the performance venue, and listen to the original electronic works that we are performing in the different locations, you will experience sounds and music that are transforming, changing, and evolving. You will watch some of us playing quiet, chilled out, lo-fi, ambient, or experimental glitched music. Others will be playing more upbeat, bouncy, synthwave, dark synth, future bass, or electronic dance music. All of this takes place over an underlying bed of ambience that you hear in-between. As you take your walk around our liminal space tonight, and listen to our original electronic music performances, we hope this experience will help you better reflect on the "spaces between" that we often take for granted.
OmnIVerse: The Fourth Dimension is an immersive sonic experience by NUS Electronic Music Lab in collaboration with Bernice Ong and bani haykal, highlighting the liminality of space, music and material to take you to a superliminal fourth dimension.
SYNOPSIS
OmnIVerse: The Fourth Dimension is an immersive musical experience that navigates you through experiences of being in liminal states and spaces.
Guided by principal tutor Benjamin Ang, NUS Electronic Music Lab presents original music compositions combined with scenography by Bernice Ong and sound design by bani haykal, creating a multi-sensorial experience that highlights liminal temporalities, sites and soundscapes. From psychedelic trance to lo-fi beats, our artists harness sensory technologies and materials to facilitate states of being in transit, opening up a superliminal fourth dimension.
