NERI Seminar on Feb 28, 2024 by Dr Lim Sin Mei: Plastic in Road? What happens at the end of its service life?
Over the past 3 years, NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI) and NUS Civil and Environmental Engineering research teams led by Prof Raymond Ong have been conducting intensive research on the characterisation of major plastic wastes in Singapore as well as on the mixing technology for the development of waste plastic-modified asphalt concrete. Dr Lim Sin Mei, Senior Research Fellow, has been instrumental to the team.
During Dr Lim’s recent presentation at NERI Seminar Series held on 28 Feb 2024, she discussed the recyclability potential for waste plastic-modified asphalt concrete at the end of its service life.
Promising results have been obtained based on the structural and mechanical performance of the waste plastic-modified asphalt concrete. In particular, she shared that incorporation of at least 20% aged content in the recycling mix with waste plastic generally improved its mechanical properties compared with the conventional asphalt mix.
With the current research coming into conclusion, the project team is looking to work towards the recyclability potential of mixed plastics. For further details, please contact Prof Raymond Ong.
