A renowned information systems scholar and long-serving academic leader, Professor Bernard Tan has served in the Office of the Provost for the past 17 years. He chairs the University Committee on Educational Policy. He previously chaired the Board of Undergraduate Studies and the Board of Graduate Studies. He has played a pivotal role in steering the University's educational policies and directions in alignment with the rapidly changing workplace.
- Professor Tan has overseen and facilitated curriculum reforms in NUS College, College of Humanities and Sciences, College of Design and Engineering, Business School, School of Computing, Conservatory of Music, Faculty of Law, and the Health Sciences programmes (Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy).
- He was instrumental to the successful launch of interdisciplinary undergraduate programmes and introduction of interdisciplinary components into undergraduate programmes throughout the University to broaden the educational exposure for students. He changed the educational framework, allowing graduates to return as continuing education students to take courses for upskilling and reskilling.
- Professor Tan has served on various platforms, including the Human Potential Steering Committee for Singapore. He has also fostered broader efforts to innovate education with AI through chairing inter-university workgroups and communities of practice that seek to incorporate AI into curriculum and pedagogy, preparing students for an AI-prevalent workplace.
Professor Tan has also overseen the transformation of key units under the Office of the Provost.
- The Office of Admissions has deployed technology (including AI) to reinforce outreach efforts, improve intake projections, and enhance effectiveness of aptitude-based admissions. Undergraduate acceptance rates have reached record highs for the past few years.
- The Office of University Registrar has undergone major process transformation and deployed technology (including AI) to enhance its services to students. Professor Tan chairs the Next Generation Student Information Systems Steering Committee that facilitates these efforts.
- The Centre for Future-Ready Graduates has worked with faculties and schools to strengthen internship programmes and deployed technology (including AI) to improve job placements for students. Professor Tan chairs the Internship Steering Committee that facilitates these efforts.
Professor Tan has further shaped the international academic community in the field of information systems through sustained society and editorial leadership. He has served as President of the Association for Information Systems, and on the editorial boards of leading journals (MIS Quarterly, Management Science, Journal of the AIS, Journal of MIS, ACM Transactions on MIS, and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management).
