What is MO theory that Elliot focuses on?
Molecular Orbital (MO) Theory is one of the threshold concepts taught in foundation chemistry courses. Most students find it challenging to grasp the concept as it requires mental and 3D visualization of how atomic/molecular orbitals overlap. Having a good grasp of MO theory will allow students to better understand/rationalise more advanced chemistry concepts, e.g. chemical reactivity, etc.
In collaboration with TEL Imaginarium, Elliot and his supervisors aim to develop an interactive mobile app to enhance students’ understanding of MO theory through 3D visualization/simulation and inquiry-based learning using Merge Cube AR.
