Event Details

Discover powerful orchestral masterworks from across times and contexts, presented by the YST Orchestral Institute under the baton of Principal Conductor Jason Lai.

The concert begins with South Korean composer Unsuk Chin’s subito con forza (suddenly with force), composed in honour of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary in 2020. The piece draws inspiration from his constant search for new directions and use of enormous contrasts, “from volcanic eruptions to extreme serenity”.

Aptly, we then follow this homage with Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont, one of his most popular works conceived for the stage (for a Goethe tragedy), and an expression of triumphant martyrdom outshining tragedy. Concluding the evening is Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, an emotional "tour de forza!" – one of the composer’s most beloved orchestral works, written after a deep depression after the premiere of his first symphony; a true celebration of artistry in the face of adversity.
