About the speakers:
Professor Simon Chesterman
Simon Chesterman is David Marshall Professor and Vice Provost (Educational Innovation) at the National University of Singapore, where he is also the founding Dean of NUS College. He serves as Senior Director of AI Governance at AI Singapore and Editor of the Asian Journal of International Law. Previously, he was Dean of NUS Law from 2012 to 2022 and Co‐President of the Law Schools Global League from 2021 to 2023.
Educated in Melbourne, Beijing, Amsterdam, and Oxford, Professor Chesterman’s teaching experience includes periods at the Universities of Melbourne, Oxford, Southampton, Columbia, and Sciences Po. From 2006‐2011, he was Global Professor and Director of the New York University School of Law Singapore Programme. Prior to joining NYU, he was a Senior Associate at the International Peace Academy and Director of UN Relations at the International Crisis Group in New York.
Professor Chesterman is the author or editor of more than twenty books, including We, the Robots? Regulating Artificial Intelligence and the Limits of the Law (CUP, 2021) and One Nation Under Surveillance (OUP, 2011). He also writes on legal education and higher education more generally, and is the author of five novels including the Raising Arcadia trilogy and Artifice.
Ms Lee Wan Sie
Lee Wan Sie is Director for Data-Driven Tech at Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). In the area of AI, her responsibilities include driving Singapore’s approach to AI governance, growing the trustworthy AI ecosystem in Singapore and collaborating with governments around the world to further the development of responsible AI. She is also responsible for encouraging greater use of emergent data technologies, such as privacy enhancing tech, to enable more trusted data sharing in Singapore.
Wan Sie has extensive experience in technology use in the public sector – prior to her current role, she developed Singapore’s strategies for Digital Economy and Smart Nation, enabled tech experimentation and innovation as head of IDA Labs, and implemented government digital services that helped Singapore become one of the easiest places in a world to do business. Outside of Singapore, she has worked with governments around the world in their national digitalisation efforts. Wan Sie actively supports Women in Tech in Singapore, to encourage young women to take up a career in technology.
Mr Raju Chellam (moderator)
Raju Chellam is the Editor-in-Chief of the AI E&G BoK (AI Ethics & Governance Body of Knowledge), an initiative by the SCS (Singapore Computer Society) & IMDA. He is also the Chairman of Cloud & Data Standards at ITSC (IT Standards Committee), and a Fellow of ACE (Advanced Computing for Executives) at NUS School of Computing.
He has been in the IT industry for the past 43 years and was conferred as an SCS Fellow in March 2018.
Ms Brindha Jeyaraman
Brindha is a seasoned Data Science and Engineering professional with 14+ years of experience crafting Machine Learning solutions and building robust systems. Her expertise spans across data analytics, cloud technologies, and software development, allowing her to architect solutions from concept to deployment.
Her achievements include authoring two books on real-time streaming and Machine Learning and receiving academic awards such as the SPH Gold Medal and Book Prize for M.Tech, Knowledge Engineering.
She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Engineering degree in AI with SMU. Brindha brings both technical prowess and a passion for innovation to every project. Her dedication, leadership skills, and analytical mind make her a valuable asset to any team, driving results in fast-paced environments while staying at the forefront of technological advancements.
