Take a step (literally!) into learning more about Hainanese culture with us. Join us on a delectable walking tour to discover the history of the Hainanese communities and their food in Singapore.
Tour Outline:
1. Uncover the roots: Learn about the origins of the Hainanese people and their intriguing journey to the bustling Bugis precinct.
2. Raffles’ Secret Ingredient: Step back in time at the iconic Raffles Hotel and discover the story of Ngiam Tong Boon, the Hainanese bartender who invented the world-famous Singapore Sling.
3. Chicken Rice and Beyond: Explore the culinary havens of Seah Street and Purvis Street, where you’ll delve into the history of Hainanese chicken rice and other signature dishes that tantalise taste buds.
4. The Heart of Hainanese Community: Learn about the Hainan Hwee Kuan, a clan association that plays a vital role in preserving Hainanese heritage.
5. Hidden Gems: Discover the hidden Hylam Street within the modern Bugis Junction and learn about the Hainanese communities.
6. A Sweet Finale: End your tour with a delightful treat! Sample Yi Bua, a special collaboration between All Things Hainanese and Café O (a local coffee shop), that will introduce you to a traditional Hainanese snack. The owner of All Things Hainanese, Jocelyn Loi will also do a sharing as a third generation Hainanese kueh maker.
The tour includes a serving of the special Hainanese snack Yi Bua and a drink from Café O.

Terms & Conditions
- Registration for the event is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and priority is for NUS alumni and students. NUS alumni and students will be required to provide details on your NUS student and alumni ID to enjoy the subsidised price.
- Registration fees are strictly non-refundable.
- The food included in the tour is no pork no lard (Yi Bua snack) or Halal certified (Café O).
- The venue is unable to accommodate any food allergies.
- Guests will be required to walk for the tour and crossing of roads will be expected.
- Photography and videography will be carried out for archival and marketing purposes. NUS and its event partners may use some or all of these images/videos in their print publications, digital platforms and marketing channels.
- By registering for this event, you hereby consent to NUS collecting, using and/ or disclosing your personal data to third parties (including any third party located outside of Singapore) for the purpose of processing, handling and managing your participation in the event stated herein.
- The organiser reserves the right to make changes to the event programme - including but not limited to speakers, schedule, and content - without prior notice.
- The organiser reserves the right to cancel or reschedule the event due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the organiser's control. Registered participants will be notified via email or other means of communication provided during registration.
