Eric C. Thompson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the National University of Singapore. He is the author of Unsettling Absences: Urbanism in Rural Malaysia (2007) and The Story of Southeast Asia (2024), and co-editor of Southeast Asian Anthropologies (2019) and Asian Smallholders: Persistence and Transformation (2019), among other publications.

Drawing on long-term ethnographic research in Muslim communities in rural Central Java and northern Peninsular Malaysia, this seminar examines how responsibility, guidance and providing for one's family shape understandings of masculinity and leadership. Challenging conventional notions of patriarchy, it explores how mutual cooperation, shared responsibilities and protection influence family relationships and gender ideals in contemporary Muslim Southeast Asia.
