Topic: Recycling Plastics - Upgrading Plastic Pyrolysis Oil for Steam Cracker Feedstock
The worldwide annual production of plastics reached 400 million tons in 2022, and is increasing. Landfilling and incineration are commonly applied solution for plastics waste, and only about 10% of plastics waste produced in Europe is currently recycled. The need for efficient and cost recycling technology is acute. The purpose of this presentation is to describe what kind of activities VTT has in chemical recycling of plastics. A specific emphasis is on upgrading plastics pyrolysis oils by applying adsorption technology. The technology have been tested for the removal of halogens Cl and Br, which are known to be catalyst poisons in pyrolysis oil DSP.
Speaker's Biography:
Dr Antero LAITINEN, Manager Process Chemistry Development
He received his doctorate Ph.D (Chem.Eng) in the field of separation science and technology from Aalto University, and has since worked at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. During his career, he has worked as a Research Team Leader, and worked in several sales roles. Currently, his activities include plastics pyrolysis oil value chain development, especially upgrading the oil after pyrolysis.
