Programme highlights:
8:30am - 10:00am: 50,000th milestone tree planting

A milestone tree-planting with our community of staff and students supporting the nation’s OneMillionTrees movement. To commemorate the halfway mark to planting 100,000 trees on campus, we are planting Margaritaria Indica, a national heritage tree first discovered during the construction of UTown College in 2012.

10:30am - 1:30pm: Iceberg Series panel discussions
Exhibition showcase of Campus Sustainability Roadmap 2030 with key focus on our campus greening journey since 2011 and Zero Waste campus efforts fronted by students, staff and industry partners.

Iceberg Series deep dive panel discussions on "Where Do Our Plastic Recyclables End Up - Closing the Plastic Waste Loop" and "Campus as a Real-World Living Laboratory to Tackle Climate Change".

Panel Discussion Topic #1:
Where Do Our Plastic Recyclables End Up? Closing the Plastic Waste Loop

The use of plastics in our daily lives and organisational activities are prevalent and ubiquitous. In 2023, plastic waste comprised close to a third waste disposed for incineration in Singapore, while plastic recycling rate was low at 5%. Managing demand sustainably is a worldwide concern as the processes to extract, produce, distribute and dispose plastics have environmental and social impacts beyond geographical boundaries.

The panel will deep dive inconvenient truths on (1) our plastic recycling efforts and its “real” impact, (2) a critical look at our public commingled recycling system, and (3) what our students, organisations and government do to tackle the intractable growing plastic waste problem.

Panellists:
Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment
Dr Adrian Ang, PBM, Director (Group Sustainability & New Business), Chye Thiam Maintenance
Mr Loo Deliang, PBM, Head of Sustainability Strategy Unit, Campus Infrastructure, NUS
Ms Gracia Goh, Co-President, NUS Students’ Association for Visions of the Earth (SAVE)
Moderator:
Dr Jovan Tan
, Lecturer, Engineering Design and Innovation Centre, NUS College of Design and Engineering

Panel Discussion Topic #2:
Campus as a Real-World Living Laboratory to Tackle Climate Change

Functioning as microcosms of society, universities like NUS are in a unique position to show thewy forward in mitigating carbon emissions and adapting to climate. Using campus grounds as a living laboratory, universities can test-bed solutions to real world problems, bridge industry-academic gap through collaborative partnerships and create impact beyond university grounds.

Universities also have a public service role to shape the hearts and minds of our students to be responsible stewards of the environment, by promoting sustainable behaviours and practices supported by campus infrastructure and facilities.

The panel discussion will include sharing of new research findings on carbon sequestration and how greenery impacts micro-climate and colling on Kent Ridge campus and discuss how living laboratories can be implemented effectively on campuses.

Panellists:
Mr Koh Yan Leng, Vice President (Campus Infrastructure), NUS
Dr Marcel Ignatius, Co-Principal Investigator, Cool NUS-BEAM project, NUS College of Design and Engineering
Mr Steve Hoong Chen Teo, Climate and Ecosystem Scientist, Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions, NUS
Ms Nadya Heryanto, Co-President, NUS Students’ Association for Visions of the Earth (SAVE)
Moderator:
Dr Sean Shin, Senior Lecturer, NUS Business School
