Returning to the NUS Arts Festival for the second year, Asian Contemporary Ensemble revisits the lost trades of Asia through creative and critical interpretations in contemporary music.
Gone are the roving hawkers in quaint services like fortune tellers and calligraphers that used to ply the corridors of five-foot ways. As Singapore progressed, the need for their services slowly diminished. Three young composers, handpicked and mentored by master composer Chong Kee Yong have created new modern works inspired by the gradual disappearance of these familiar Asian trades.
Led by Conductor and Artistic Director Wong Kah Chun, the Ensemble presents these works in a creative combination of chamber music and street storytelling of 1950s Chinatown. Renowned storyteller and writer Rosemarie Somaiah will bring these tales alive and recreate this now extinct form of street art.
