Hungry Stones weaves dance, music and installation to explore themes of isolation and confinement , as the role of women evolves within traditional Asian society and globalization lands women into a westernized, post-feminist world. This performance is inspired by a short story written by Rabindranath Tagore about a man who encounters a ruined palace which was once a harem.

Returning to the NUS Arts Festival for the second year, Asian Contemporary Ensemble revisits the lost trades of Asia through creative and critical interpretations in contemporary music. Led by Conductor and Artistic Director Wong Kah Chun, the Ensemble presents these works in a creative combination of chamber music and street storytelling of 1950s Chinatown.

Through music, The Hive tells stories of how people continually experience Asian cities, its shared challenges and aspirations, and portrays the dialectics between tradition and modernity. The music pieces attempt to exhibit the nature of Asian cities as distinctive communities with a common value, an intangible we call “Asian”.

Inspired by the writer’s personal battles with eczema, The Boy Inside is a dramatized reading featuring live soundscapes in the intimate setting of the Dance Studio. This heartwarming and thought-provoking piece seeks to relook the idea of parenting and challenges us to question the notion of what it means to raise or be the “perfect” child.

Trained in Japanese shakuhachi and Hindustani classical vocal music and tabla, Javanese gamelan and Korean music, T M Hoffman is an Honors graduate in music and humanities of four universities in USA, Japan and India. He promotes intra-Asian exchanges throughout Asia and the world. Come discover the pure synthesis between the Indian and Japanese at his workshop lecture and performance.

13 weeks | 8 hours per week | 2 choreographies. Under the mentorship of Yarra Ileto and Lee Mun Wai from T.H.E Dance Company, Koustav and Ali spent an intensive 13-week period to create a work-in-progress showcase at CONTACT 2011 - Open Stage in December 2011. Their soul-searching journey continues with another 13 weeks, as they present their full-length works at this festival.
