My Life As McDull is a story about the childhood of a native Hong Kong child, McDull, who is born to a single parent family. McDull’s mother, Mrs Mak is a career woman who takes on various jobs to survive in the complicated society of Hong Kong. She places all her hopes and love on her son. McDull was determined to win the Olympic Games gold medal, but met with failure in the course of pursuing his dream. Yet he continues to forge on with courage and optimism, and creates his own beautiful world.
The film has a distinctive Hong Kong character, coupling real scenes of Hong Kong with computer graphics, creating a whole new visual experience. The experiences of childhood and growing up as portrayed in the movie is full of laughter and tears, allowing audience of different ages to identify with it.
My Life As McDull won the Best Animated Feature at the Golden Horse Film Festival 2002, FIPRESCI Prize at the Hong Kong International Film Festival 2002, Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2003, Best Feature Film at Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival 2003, and Special Jury Prize for Feature Film at Montreal International Children’s Film Festival.
