Sustainability

Investing responsibly, supporting the transition to a greener future

As a leading global university based in Asia, NUS is committed to advancing sustainable development and contributing to the global fight against climate change.

Sustainability is deeply embedded in the DNA of the University, from education to research and campus operations.

As a sign of its commitment, the University Sustainability and Climate Action Council was formed in 2021 to build on its involvement and momentum in spearheading sustainability. Chaired by the NUS President and composed of faculty and staff, the council guides and shapes policies and programmes that will transform how the university generates new knowledge, equips graduates with future-ready skills, and develops a climate-resilient campus.

Investing Responsibly

In our pursuit of sustainable risk-adjusted returns, we benefit from a broad investment universe. However, we avoid businesses misaligned with our core values. We expect managers to treat stakeholders with respect and uphold integrity, extending this expectation to their portfolios.

Since implementing our Sustainable Investment Policy in 2021, we no longer invest directly in companies deriving substantial revenue from fossil fuel extraction or burning unless we are convinced they are actively transitioning away from these activities. As responsible stewards of capital, we strive to ensure that our managers have processes in place to assess the risk and impact of climate change on our portfolios, to reduce the risk of permanent asset impairment.

We carefully evaluate our current and potential managers' commitment towards integrating environmental, social and governance factors in their business operations and investment process. For managers early in their path towards better responsible investment practices, we journey closely with them towards an appropriate level of integration for their strategy.
