Training

NUS Comparative Medicine (CM) is a NParks/AVS-licensed animal research facility with an AAALAC accredited animal care and use program.

All staff and students caring for, and using live vertebrates for scientific purposes e.g. research, training and teaching at NUS must be educated, trained and qualified to use animals in a humane and ethical manner.

The Responsible Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (RCULA) training courses meet and comply with the requirements for training as set forth in the National Advisory Committee for Laboratory Animal Research (NACLAR) Guidelines.

RCULA training courses will give personnel a general understanding on the biology of the species, basic techniques, regulations and the responsibilities in using animals for scientific purposes.

These include their use in:

  • Teaching;
  • Field work environmental studies;
  • Research;
  • Diagnostics;
  • Product testing; and
  • Production of biological products.

The RCULA courses consist of 2 training components:

  1. Didactic, and
  2. Relevant species hands-on training.

Successful participants will be awarded certificates, the serial number of which will be required when submitting protocols for review by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
