“Alamak” and “tapau” were among the words recently added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Writers including Prof Lionel Wee, Dean, and Adj Prof Low Ee Ling, Department of English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies, both from the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, remark that effective communication requires being adaptable. This means knowing how to adapt the way we use language according to the topic, the people that we are interacting with and the mode of communication.
