NUS Sustainability CONNECT returns this year, focusing on the theme Rethink Sustainability: Innovation and Impact. With over 30 activities, it will showcase the University’s commitment to exploring and advancing new ways to create a more sustainable future. This year, the more condensed Highlight edition of the festival – comprising a week-long programme of talks, tours and workshops – continues to champion sustainability while connecting communities.

At the Kent Ridge Ministerial Forum 2024, a flagship event organised by the NUS Students' Political Association, Minister for Foreign Affairs and NUS alumni Dr Vivian Balakrishnan shared his insights and lessons on the policies and principles guiding Singapore’s foreign relations, amidst ever-changing global challenges. The forum was attended by over 250 students from NUS and other tertiary education institutions.

Experiential learning and the interdisciplinary approach are two hallmarks of an NUS College (NUSC) education that converge in the honours college’s flagship Impact Experience programme – a compulsory two-year service learning and community engagement project. The signature capstone project challenges NUSC students to devise solutions for “wicked” societal problems in Singapore and the surrounding region.

An architect by profession, a public service advocate and a champion for the community. Former NUS Board Member and Architecture alumnus Mr Edward D’Silva received the Meritorious Service Medal at this year’s National Day Awards for his work as the Public Hygiene Council’s former Chairman, spearheading efforts to encourage Singaporeans to take greater ownership of public cleanliness.

It was recently announced at the National Day Rally that government-paid parental leave in Singapore would be increased from five months to around seven and a half months. Dr Kalpana Vignehsa, Senior Research Fellow from the Governance and Economy Department at the Institute of Policy Studies, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS, remarks that for this latest initiative to work, employers and the society must also change their mindsets.
Cooling measures, which include tightening the maximum amount of HDB loans and updates on the Enhanced CPF Housing Grant, were announced following Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s National Day Rally speech. Prof Sing Tien Foo, Provost’s Chair Professor from the Department of Real Estate at NUS Business School, deliberates whether these measures will bring down prices in Singapore’s HDB resale market and the impact on the private housing market.
